Change management and conflict skills for NCUA's HR team

National Credit Union Administration

The challenge

NCUA's HR department was working through change and needed both new skills and a real conversation about applying them.

The team leader specifically wanted a combination of skills development and facilitated dialogue — not a lecture.

The solution

As a subcontractor to Human Technology Inc, MTI held three leadership meetings to clarify goals, objectives and key outcomes, brainstormed session design, and built an agenda.

The agenda was reviewed with the NCUA HR department lead and adjusted based on the team leader's input.

The session covered communications and conflict resolution during change: listening skills, giving feedback, and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI®), with each participant locating their own default style and identifying how to flex it.

MTI then facilitated conversation about how these skills apply inside the HR department and how the team would implement the tools and learning after the session.

Results

  • A shared model and vocabulary for conflict across the department
  • Each participant aware of their default conflict style and how to flex
  • Stronger listening and feedback practice during a period of change
  • Agreed ways to implement the tools in day-to-day HR work
  • Evaluation data gathered and returned to the leadership team
